Many young people regularly help out on the family farm.
Scenes like a farmer’s son driving a tractor, helping collect bales or working during the busy harvest season are iconic images of what the rural, Prairie lifestyle is all about.
Those images have also served to muddy the waters of the child-labour debate on Alberta farms, according to some.

Farmworkers union continuing WCB push PDF Print

It’s just a matter of wait and see for Eric Musekamp, president of the Farmworkers Union of Alberta (FUA).
Musekamp wants an extension of mandatory worker’s compensation paid to farmworkers so that these costs and more are paid for by the agriculture industry through the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) and not paid for by taxpayers through Alberta Health Services (AHS).

The Marose family farm south of Taber is dwarfed by many of the agricultural operations which surround it, but when it comes to prestige, size doesn’t always matter.
The 200-acre farm (SE 15-9-16 W-4), currently operated by Norman and Ruby Marose, was recently honoured with the provincial Alberta Century Farm and Ranch Award, which celebrates any farm that has been continuously operated by a single family for more than a century.
