As southern Albertans were frustrated by the long-weekend rain, sugar beet growers had a much different take on the moisture.
With a large chunk of sugar beets already in the ground, the rain that started late last Wednesday was welcome, according to Andrew Llewelyn-Jones, agricultural superintendent at Lantic Sugar.

Four candidates are in the running to take over the District 3 post as this area’s representative on the Canadian Wheat Board.
Locally, two southern Albertans are in the mix — Enchant’s Lynn Jacobson and Warner’s Brian Otto. Brett Meinert, from the Shaunavon, Sask. area and Swift Current-area farmer Stewart Wells are also in the running.

Enhancing the protection of Alberta’s agricultural land and protecting natural spaces is the aim of the new Weed Control Act, which came into effect recently.
The new legislation replaces the old act and consolidates regulations for a more streamlined and comprehensive approach to protecting the production and quality of Alberta lands from invasive plants.
Cardston-Taber-Warner MLA and parliamentary assistant for agriculture, Broyce Jacobs, explained the benefits offered by the new legislation.

Foodgrains harvest goes Thursday PDF Print

Volunteer trucks and harvesters will be getting underway on Thursday to throw in a helping hand for the Taber and District Foodgrains Project harvest, set to begin at noon.
This season won’t see a record crop for the project.
“Not the greatest,” said board member Bruce Warkentin. “The crop hasn’t been doing too well, and we seeded late, and we’re harvesting late. It’s been spotty, so we’re not expecting huge yields.”

There are no guarantees in life.
But local corn grower Garry Valgardson gave as close as you could for one, calming the fears of many that Taber’s annual Cornfest would not have the sweet kernel treat for late August.
With the poor growing season hampering corn growers in southern Alberta, no grower who was at the recent meeting with organizers with the Taber Chamber of Commerce was willing to go on record that its corn crop would be ready for Cornfest.
