It’s like something out of a James Bond film. The revelation last week that an alleged Russian spy ring with 11 key members had been attempting to infiltrate the hallowed halls of American power using wads of Russki cash and fake identities and passports came as a surprise to most across the West. The surprise? That would be referring to those of us outside of the secretive world of foreign intelligence and espionage, because it seems the Cold War never ended — or maybe somebody forgot to tell the KGB.

Brandon Davidson is one of the newest members of the Edmonton Oilers. He was selected in the sixth round by the Oilers, a team that by many accounts, had a very solid draft. If anyone was wondering, size and grit dominated Edmonton’s 2010 draft, highlighted by first-overall pick Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires. Edmonton’s other picks included second rounder 6’2†centre Tyler Pitlick, who had been pegged as a first-round talent, and 6’4†defenceman Martin Marincin, also in the second round. Centre Ryan Martindale (6’3â€), left winger Curtis Hamilton (6’2â€) and defenceman Jeremie Blain (6’2â€) join Davidson, who is also listed as a generous 6’2†in the Oilers draft-profiles section. Just where Davidson will end up a few years down the road is anyone’s guess. In this year’s entire draft class, for example, there may be only a handful of kids ready to make the jump to the National Hockey League next year, Hall being one of them.

Well, my L.A. Lakers won their 16th NBA title on Thursday night and I for one couldn’t care less. Long gone has been the allure for me watching basketball since the days of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mystical sky hook, Magic Johnson running the floor, Byron Scott hitting the timely three and Michael Cooper playing some shutdown-D. All of those players back then had their defined roll that brought them to greatness. All I see nowadays, which is a reason why I have tuned out watching basketball for the most part, is one universal role — all-star whiner.

With the world still clawing its way out of economic chaos since the advent of the recession last year, many eyes are focused on the upcoming G8/G20 meetings in Toronto. Just what these meetings might result in could be a matter of mild curiosity for the Great Unwashed. But the usual sideshow of protesters and the always-exciting possibility of a full-fledged riot is what really tends to grab the headlines. Security preparations are subject to the closest media scrutiny, down to the velocity of the rubber bullet and the potency of the tear gas, lest another WTO Seattle fiasco happens to rear its ugly head.

Another National Hockey league season has come and gone, and my prediction of the Flyers in six proved wrong. Still, I can look back on a season where my Flyers enjoyed a magical run, and took the favoured Blackhawks nearly to the limit in an exciting six-game series (one of the more enjoyable Cup finals I have watched in recent memory). For all you Hawks fan, enjoy this while you can — next year, you’re screwed. Chicago has virtually no salary-cap space left (just over one million), with several key players to resign. Restricted free agents include forward Andrew Ladd, defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson and goaltender Anti Niemi. Ladd figures to earn at least a couple million, while Hjalmarsson, by some accounts the third-best blueliner on the team, could demand at least $3 million. Niemi, now Cup-winner tender, will look at Chistobal Huet’s salary of over $5 million and wonder why he’s not worth at least $3 million or $4 million.
