Out with the old and in with the new! 2013 has kicked off a year full of exciting prospects, as the New Year brings plenty of time to renew and rejuvenate, so don’t waste it. Get up, get out and get going — working towards the achievement of goals and aspirations. Last year is a memory while the New Year allows us to start again, to revamp or re-invent or simply to keep on keepin’ on. Mark today on the calendar as the day you decide to learn something new, travel and explore a new place, maybe ask that guy or girl out on a date, rekindle a friendship, get reacquainted with a family member or break a habit or two.

As news of the recent tragic mass shooting at a school in Newtown, Conn. spread across North America and the world, a myriad of emotions were experienced by people from all walks of life — shock, disgust, anger, sadness, sympathy — even President Barack Obama seemed to be fighting back tears in a speech hours after the full scope of the tragedy had been made clear to the American public.

Last week at Wing Wednesday, being served by the best waitresses ever in the universe, Kayla Baugh and Codie Ann Blacquier (*citation needed), I caught myself being ‘That Guy’ at the restaurant. I bellowed across the room like I owned the place demanding cutlery when I easily could have waited for someone to return to the table or walk up to the bar myself.

The negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in the National Hockey League have become downright comical. I could comb over bit by bit every little item that seems to be a hang-up between the owners and players that has them at an impasse, but that information is readily available to anyone with internet accessibility. I will write just from the perspective of one more disillusioned hockey fan, shaking their collective heads over a process that seems juvenile at this point.

Does the vehicle have good gas mileage, powered windows and locks, seat and steering wheel warmers and good safety features? Is the vehicle a manual or an automatic? Does the vehicle have a stellar stereo system that is Smartphone compatible or does it come with satellite radio capabilities? Is it air conditioned? Does it have fog lights? Is there enough room to haul things and enough room for the kids? These are the questions that plague the vehicle buyer, whether the vehicle in question is new or used or big or small. The process of buying a new vehicle is indeed an exhausting experience filled with contempt for dealerships across the land, as the buyer wades knee-deep in possible features the vehicle must possess — along with the worries of the make, the models, the prices and the discounts. Not to mention the constant stress of even being able to afford the new ride with changes in insurance premiums and the fluctuating cost of petrol. Maddening it is, sort of. It is also really exciting and like opening presents at Christmas.
