Another National Hockey league season has come and gone, and my prediction of the Flyers in six proved wrong.
Still, I can look back on a season where my Flyers enjoyed a magical run, and took the favoured Blackhawks nearly to the limit in an exciting six-game series (one of the more enjoyable Cup finals I have watched in recent memory).
For all you Hawks fan, enjoy this while you can — next year, you’re screwed. Chicago has virtually no salary-cap space left (just over one million), with several key players to resign. Restricted free agents include forward Andrew Ladd, defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson and goaltender Anti Niemi. Ladd figures to earn at least a couple million, while Hjalmarsson, by some accounts the third-best blueliner on the team, could demand at least $3 million. Niemi, now Cup-winner tender, will look at Chistobal Huet’s salary of over $5 million and wonder why he’s not worth at least $3 million or $4 million.

It was interesting to see how the dynamics played out at the recent recreation board meeting last Thursday, which was the start of the path to see exactly how a prime piece of real estate out at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park is going to be developed for recreational purposes.
Upon hearing a presentation from Taber mixed slo-pitch to develop a fourth diamond on the grounds, two of the more vocal board members were Terry Sargeant and Luke Wijna.

I watch the Chicago Blackhawks and I have to balk.
I watch the Philadelphia Flyers and I want to hurt myself with pliers.
That is an example of some of the tear-soaked poetry I’ve written lately as I painfully watch the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs as my beloved Pittsburgh Penguins have their tee times firmly booked.
Even more painful is the fact while Philadelphia more than deserves their place in the 2010 Cup final, Pittsburgh matched up with them very well during the regular season and probably would have given them a better run than the Montreal Canadiens did.

It was back in 1975 when my beloved Philadelphia Flyers won the team's last Stanley Cup. The team photo from that glorious championship season hangs on one of my basement walls.
Unfortunately, I was not born. I did see the 1980 loss to the New York Islanders, thanks to the NHL Network's Classic Series feature, and I did witness the Flyers getting disappointed again in 1985, 1987 and 1997.
