It has been some months since my previous installment of the The Last Word (my semi-regular column in The Taber Times), but fear not fellow bibliophiles — like MacArthur to the Phillipines — I have returned.
In the interim I have been indulging in an addiction which probably plagues even the most diligent readers among us from time to time — the sometimes uncontrollable urge to re-read favourite books or novels. It’s a compulsion for me, for which I have coined the term “binge reading.” Sometimes pouring through a series of less-than-satisfactory selections over a period of months can leave one with the craving to re-explore those true favourites and feel the thrill of rediscovering characters or noticing details in the narrative that have previously escaped us.

Being a dad fascinates me, in that, I have the uncanny ability to transport my “aging gracefully” self back to a time when I ruled in my imaginary world that I created with mostly inanimate toys. I was king of my proverbial built out of Lego castle.

Seeing Jabba-the-Hut jowls in the mirror and being as active as your garden-variety sloth being tied up at work, I’ve decided to have local Joel Mills be my get-off-your-ass guru by working out three times a week when my work schedule allows.

Earlier this month, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird blamed Russia for the United Nations (UN) “losing its relevance” in dealing with the quickly deteriorating humanitarian and military situation in Syria.
