Smoking rates among Alberta teenagers and young adults shot up by a relative 40 per cent last year. To mark this year’s National Non-Smoking Week, the Canadian Cancer Society is asking that Albertans call on their MLAs to pass stronger legislation that will reduce smoking rates and save lives.

Karen Ingram - Taber Irrigation Impact Museum manager
The staff and volunteers at the museum have done many research projects that would not have been possible without the Taber Times on microfilm. Our summer students have spent many hours compiling a book of some of the Associations and Clubs that have had chapters in Taber. We have spent hours researching some of the businesses in town and continue with this project.  We have shared our research with the Taber Times with articles about our early oil patch history and have compiled several items on our early coal mining history.

While it might come as a shock to some of us, not everyone in this country is sharing in the benefits of the supposed success story that is Canada’s economy. While federal politicians (especially the Harper Conservatives) won’t hesitate to praise to the skies the strength of the Canadian economy, the slow but steady recovery from global recession, and increased job creation, it seems a growing percentage of Canadians are being left behind or shut out of the benefits of this bright, glittery, oil-driven future.

Musings — Chris Takos
Cognitive dissonance — now there’s a term to wrap your head around. The first time I heard it, I knew it meant something important and that anyone speaking it in public would sound intelligent. Now, sounding intelligent and being intelligent are two different things, for it turns out cognitive dissonance hints at the opposite of intelligence... or at least of being wise.
