I heard something the other day that had me thinking about extreme weather in other areas of the world. Used as we Albertans are to the whims of Mother Nature, we find these last few months of on-again off-again weather patterns hard to swallow. It’s hot, it’s cold, it’s wet, it’s dry – oh, there’s the snow again. We aren't the only ones, and we should probably be thankful that the weather is unable to make up it's mind, rather than pummel us as it has been doing elsewhere.

My musical experience has always been limited to three instruments: the recorder I played off-tune in Grade 3, the ukulele I played for a Christmas concert in Grade 7, and the keyboard that I taught myself to play while at my grandmother's.

I'm sure I am not the only one to have noticed that we seemed to have missed spring. My birthday is right before the first full day of spring, so I know it was supposed to be here — and yet it has eluded us. The spring rains and warming temperatures were at first side-swiped by snow, July heat, more snow, and then the warmth of August. Suddenly, we have found ourselves in the middle of summer and a whole ton of wind.

While mounting our newest exhibit on ranching, both sheep and cattle, at the museum I got to wondering about barbed wire. When was the first wire made, who made it and why? These were the questions that first popped into my mind so to the internet I went. My search led me to the wondrous discovery of a museum dedicated to the subject of barb wire. Located in Texas the Devils Rope Barbed Wire Museum site was full of information and answered all my questions and then some.

There is nothing like coming to the end of a long hard job and seeing the fruits of your labour in front of you. Whether you are a construction worker and you watch the sweat you poured into a place begin to turn into a house at the end of the day or you are a painter who begins with nothing but a white canvas and after several hours sees a masterpiece forming from the tip of your brush. Likewise, it is sometimes difficult to work hard, and often for a long time, with hardly anything to show for it.
