The front-page story in The Lethbridge Herald last Tuesday asked the question — Are MLAs paid OK? Quoted in the story was former MLA Ray Speaker from Enchant, who told a hearing, Premier Allison Redford’s salary of $211,000 is actually less than the $264,000 made by the senior civil servant who advises her. The story went on to mention the salary for Redford’s chief of staff, Stephen Carter, starts at $197,000, and can escalate almost $70,000 from there.

A wise decision was made by council Monday night, as it rejected all tenders for renovations to the administration building. Administration had recommended council go with a bid from Medicine Hat’s Amron Construction, in the amount of just under $1.176 million.

It is a topic that has been nearly beat to death over the last year — sponsorship for town-owned facilities. However, even after a number of explanations from Partnership Group, the company in charge of the first phase of the process, and tons of discussion by town council and the recreation board, uncertainty reigns supreme for many.

The end of one year and the beginning of a new year often puts the focus on volunteers in our communities. A number of community organizations honour their volunteers around the holiday season or at the beginning of a new year. These events serve to show appreciation for the service volunteers give to their communities in a wide range of events and programs.

EDITOR; Happy New Year! In 2012 we are fortunate enough to have Jan. 1 fall on the weekend. Even though it’s not required by law under the Government of Alberta Employment Standards, many employers recognize a general holiday on a weekend by giving their employees who do not work weekends a day off work the following Monday.
