It’s almost time — time for Taber’s late-August tradition to thrill locals and visitors alike. Cornfest 2010 is upon us and once again, it seems everything is in place for another exciting celebration. Each and every year, it seems a new addition is made to the party, which adds a new spin to the celebration and helps keep the event fresh. Simply put, if you are bored this weekend, it is your own fault. There are myriad events going on from Thursday to Sunday, in what promises to be the most jam-packed Cornfest weekend in recent memory. With Thursday night’s Rumble in the Cage mixed martial arts fights and the midway wristband night, all the way to Sunday’s worship in the park and the demolition derby, there is truly something for everyone. As usual, Friday and Saturday will be the busiest days, particularly Saturday, where events take place from 8 a.m. with the traditional pancake breakfast to the fireworks show at 10 p.m. Of course, all of these activities simply could not go on without a truckload of volunteers in charge of each and every detail. Countless hours are put in by not only the Taber and District Chamber of Commerce, but local volunteers, who plan each and every detail of the celebration. Not to be forgotten as well, are the community-based businesses who sponsor Cornfest. Without that support, the weekend would simply not be what it is today. Our local businesses show they believe in this celebration, and in Taber, by putting their hard-earned dollars towards this very worthy cause. Last, but certainly not least, are the local agricultural producers, who have struggled through a tough, unpredictable spring and summer. With their efforts, and a little late-summer help from Mother Nature, Taber will have corn for Cornfest, despite some earlier fears. So, as they say, come for the corn, and stay for the fun! Enjoy Cornfest 2010. |
