EDITOR;
On Nov. 14, my daughter was standing at her kitchen window, quietly watching the birds at her feeder and fixing herself her second cup of coffee, when she noticed a young man (in his early 20s) walking north down the alley, acting quite suspiciously. He spotted Marg in the window, started running, and then sprinted out of sight.
Marg’s dogs, who were outside at the time, then started barking while peeking under the fence, with rumps and tails wiggling and wagging, and setting up a terrible ruckus. So, she opened the back door to let them in, and then heard a loud, pitiful meowing.
She went to investigate and found a little kitten, approximately four or five months old, shivering from the cold and so afraid it was actually trembling.
As a 72-year-old lover of all animals, but who has a special fondness for cats, I find this young person’s actions not only repulsive, offensive and completely unbelievable, but oh so common in today’s sick, throw-away society.
I do wonder what kind of parenting is happening today, or should I say lack of parenting. Are parents no longer teaching respect and love for all of God’s creatures?
It has become quite common now for extreme animal abuse, poaching and a general wanting to kill anything that becomes too much of a problem, such as the bunny rabbits in Canmore, the wolves in B.C., the moose in Newfoundland and the seals in Quebec.
What has happened to compassion and problem solving that doesn’t involve killing? Our society, because I believe there are too many people, is becoming more violent, uncaring, intolerant and extremely selfish and self-centred, and far too many children and animals are paying the price.
We the people must take control of our own lives, and with common sense, common decency and dignity, return to being God loving, caring, compassionate people, not the sick society that far too many have become.
As for the young man that threw that defenseless kitten in the dumpster, you poor excuse for a human being should also be thrown somewhere — into a pile of manure, because that is where you belong.
