EDITOR; On behalf of the Taber Library Board, I feel I must calm our patrons down and respond to Mr. Dick Atling’s letter of Dec. 16, 2009. While it is true adult library memberships did go up by 15 per cent from $7 to $10, the increase occurred 11 months ago in January 2009. Mr. Atling’s alarmed response seems to be a little late. In researching other libraries in the region, a $10 adult membership fee is certainly on par, if not below, many other library memberships such as Lethbridge, Nanton, Pincher Creek and Brooks, and look at the tremendous value that you receive. For $10 a year, our patrons have access not only to books (brought in, by request, from virtually anywhere in the world) but also CDs, DVDs, Daisy readers and audio books for the visually impaired, internet access, Galt Museum passes, video conferencing, rotating displays from the Alberta Foundation of the Arts, the Galt Museum and local citizens, children’s reading and crafts programs, free classes, author readings, lectures and most recently, in partnership with Taber Sustainability, An Evening of Music and Mirth, a musical recital which was standing room only. Coming in the near future will be Overdrive — a new system that will allow our patrons to download digital books and music from their home computers directly onto other devices such as iPods and MP3 players, and as technology changes, so will the Taber Public Library. As much as we would love to offer all of the above for free, in today’s tough economy it just isn’t possible but still, we consider it to be quite a bargain. We would like to re-assure our patrons we are not raising our membership fees anytime in the near future! LAURA ROSS-GIROUX Board Chair, Taber Public Library |
