EDITOR; With the recent revelation of more than $15,000 dollars illegally donated to the P.C. party of Alberta, I think it is time Albertans get some answers. There are dozens of similar examples of illegal donations throughout the province, yet Albertans aren't being provided with sufficient information. If your neighbour is under investigation for a serious crime, details are released and the public is informed. Yet, because of the laws set-up by the governing P.C.s, no information regarding political party corruption investigations are released. This is not right, nor is it in the best interest of democracy. I would like to call on past P.C. constituency association president and current P.C. MLA candidate Pat Shimbashi to release the names of the constituencies under investigation for illegal activities. Most of the comments I've heard from those involved in these illegal donations is one that revolves around ignorance ("I didn't know it was illegal"). Such a defense is not successful in a court of law and I don't think applies here either. These actions appear to be the unfortunate result of 40-plus years of one-party rule, where partisan political party actions and government involvement become confusingly, and wrongly, blurred. Alison Redford promised the most transparent and open government in the history of Alberta. I think it is time for her, and Pat Shimbashi, to begin to fulfill that promise and release the constituency associations involved in the investigation. DAVE WRIGHT Magrath |
