Re: letter "Child labour " by Connie Waddle.
Yes, I suppose there are some extreme cases in child labour, but in general, I and my siblings, and also my own children, were so blessed to learn the work ethic.
Already at a very young age we were given the responsibility for certain jobs in or outside the home. We were praised for doing a good job, or made to do a poor job over again, that builds character.
I am not sure what MLA David Swann’s real intention is, but it seems that he is trying to create friction in a vibrant food-production industry, an industry that Alberta is blessed with.
There is also the concern of the letter writer about the influx of the Mexican Mennonites, and their poor school attendance. Southern Alberta is so blessed to have them, because of the shortage of the agricultural labour force. In the same Taber Times, superintendent of schools Cheryl Gilmore, had a report of the improvement in attendance of the Mennonite children in our schools, that is a positive, and I am sure a better approach than hiring truancy officers.
So give these people time, the integrating of any group in society takes time, society needs to reach out, and care for each other. After all, most all of us, or our forefathers came to this country as immigrants.
From a former Dutchman, proud of my heritage, adopted and granted citizenship by this melting pot of people we call Canada, a country built on a foundation that recognizes God and the rule of law.
