Family Literacy Day will be celebrated this Friday here in Taber.
Puppets and Pajamas will be hosted at the Taber Public Library, which will feature Jocelyn Steinborn, a local teacher. Steinborn is noted for her ability to entertain and use puppets, to the delight of her students in the classroom. Students already in high school remember when they had the "Puppet Lady," Steinborn, for their teacher back in the primary grades.
The whole family is invited to come to the library for the 7-8 p.m. show, which will include puppets and stories. Hot chocolate and doughnuts will be provided. Children are invited to come in their pajamas to give a "Bedtime Story" feel to the activity.
Another local Family Literacy Day event taking place in the community is a contest for grades 1-3. Each classroom has been given a book and a tote, and they have been asked to design three activities to go with the book.
After judging, the books and the totes, with permission, will be placed in area waiting rooms as another activity to help children stay occupied as they wait for the dentist or the doctor. There are prizes for each grade level classroom. First prize will be $150, second prize will be $100 and third prize will be $75. The totes will be collected at the end of January, and winners will be announced in February.
This is the 10th year of Family Literacy Day, which was founded by the ABC Canada Literacy Foundation with support from a founding sponsor. The purpose of the day is to promote the importance of families playing and reading together, as a means to help develop literacy and numeracy skills.
Sponsors of the Taber and District Literacy Activities are the Rotary Club, the Kinsmen Club, Tim Hortons and The Taber Public Library. The events are co-ordinated by the Taber and District Community Adult Learning Association. |
