Cornfest accolades well deserved PDF Print E-mail

On Page A8 of this week's Taber Times, a photo and story appear about an Alberta Motor Association honour Taber has received.
The giant plaque commemorates the 100 people, places and events selected by Albertans, things that highlight the province's unique character. The plaque which came down to Taber, certainly recognizes something that is uniquely Taber - this community's annual late-August tradition we like to call Cornfest weekend.
Cornfest has been included in the AMA's book, 100 Journeys, released last year.
All in all, this is a huge feather in our collective hats.
Recognition on a provincial scale has been a long time coming for Cornfest, an event billed as the largest free outdoor festival in southern Alberta.
Every summer, families from near and far flock to Cornfest, many of whom mark the event on their calendars every year as a can't-miss part of their summer vacation schedule.
The fact is, Cornfest has grown into a premier event, a top-notch spectacle of free entertainment and activities, along with a celebration of just one of the things that helps put Taber on the map - our corn.
Cornfest has grown and evolved over the years. It has changed names and changed locations but in the end, one thing has always stayed the same. It is a true community celebration.
Every summer, people in this community come together to put on an event that has become very huge indeed. It requires hours upon hours of volunteer labour in the weeks which lead up to the event, and on the weekend itself.
In fact, as soon as one Cornfest event ends, planning for the next year begins with meetings looking to the next year and evaluations of the Cornfest that just passed.
Nearly every community in Canada has an annual summer celebration of some kind, whether it be a homecoming event or something tied into whatever that town is known for.
Taber's annual celebration has likely gone above and beyond what organizers of the original event ever dreamed.
Now, after years of providing fun and excitement to generations of people, it has finally been properly recognized.
