Creating a great edible garden this season has been a daunting task for most Western Canadians, even those willing to put in the time and effort required for vegetables to flourish. That hasn’t been the case this year for Tony Merkle, whose garden took Best Edible Garden honours during the annual Communities in Bloom competition. Merkle’s edible garden, located at 4906-60th Ave., has bucked the trends.

With the 30th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run in 2010, fundraising events in Taber for the annual event are coming up fast and furious. Aside from the men’s body waxing event on Cornfest, the chairperson of the local Terry Fox Run committee, Yvonne Dreaddy, said Taberites will be seeing a lot of different fundraisers this month. The next one will be the annual bake sale at Scotia Bank, which is set for Friday at 8:30 a.m. On Sept. 11, there will be a 30-kilometre walk being held to commemorate the 30th year of the Terry Fox Run.

For Robert Wedel, it was an opportunity to pursue two of his passions. As a boy, he learned to ride a horse. As a teenager, he decided on a career as a physician. After medical school, could he harness them together? Wedel found his answer in Taber, where he's served residents for many years. At the same time, he's saved time to compete in western reining competitions and other equestrian events across Western Canada.

Board members with the Horizon School Division got a closer look at its financials at its August meeting for the period up to June 30. Horizon School Division is staring a $996,285 operating deficit in the face as of June 30. Original operating deficits were being forecasted as high as $1.3 million before the July announcement by Minister of Education Dave Hancock in July to fulfill a commitment to school boards by providing funding for a 2.92 per cent increase in teachers’ salaries.

Cornfest 2010 was still deemed a success, despite slightly-lower attendance than in previous years, and some undesirable weather. That’s according to Cornfest co-chair Tom Paterson, whose assessment of the weekend event was largely positive.
