The federal government’s notorious “gag order” preventing the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) from promoting a single-desk marketing system has been reinstituted after the Supreme Court of Canada denied the organization leave to appeal in a decision reached last month.
The ruling ended an ongoing legal battle between the federal government and the grain marketing agency regarding a federal government attempt to muzzle the organization over any communications not reflective of government policy.

If the province’s livestock industry is to be successful in breaking into new foreign markets and bringing export levels back up to pre-BSE levels, age verification and traceability will be an integral part of making the industry viable.
At the Beef Workshop held at the Heritage Inn last Thursday, a crowd of producers listened to Amberley Sparry, the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency mobile field representative for southern Alberta, who gave tips on proper procedures and documentation.

While consumers may end up paying the price as world sugar prices hover at 30-year highs, not everyone is complaining.
Some in southern Alberta, home to Canada's main sugar beet growing and refining industry, welcome the booming world sugar prices which mean potentially-greater profits for Lantic Sugar and higher returns for growers plagued by weather-related difficulties.

Due to the poor harvest this year, the traditional top-10 growers list was cut in half at the Taber beet growers banquet Friday night.
As such, the top five growers were recognized.
The following are the 2009 winners.
1. Joe Veres - 28.47 tonnes per acre.
2. Handy Farms Ltd. (Hank Veenstra) - 27.77 tonnes per acre.
3. William J. & R.M. James - 27.00 tonnes per acre.
4. South Trail Farms Ltd. (Rick Gregus) - 26.97 tonnes per acre.
5. Jerry and Greg Bartosek - 26.05 tonnes per acre.

Southern Alberta's sugar beet farmers are expected to claw back this year after a devastating weather-wrecked crop in 2009.
Grower official Rob Boras of Picture Butte said he expects most of the 200 farmers, many with years of sugar beet production experience, "Are ready to go at it again this year."
