Limited Canadian beef exports will now be reaching an Asian shore that has banned beef imports from Canada since the outbreak of BSE in Canadian beef in 2003.
Last month, South Korea announced it was rescinding its ban on Canadian beef imports under 30 months of age. Before 2003, South Korea represented Canada’s fourth largest beef export market.

With marketing freedom now achieved for Western Canadian barley growers, creating robust marketing systems is a vital next step.
“As far as challenges go, I don’t see a lot of challenges,” said Brian Otto, president of the Western Barley Growers Association (WBGA). “Barley producers have been asking for this for a long time. This challenge, of trying to free up barley, we started on this back in 1996. Malt companies are out there offering malt prices right now, trying to contract production.”

They won’t be going down without a fight.
Last week, eight former farmer-elected directors of the Canadian Wheat Board announced they were launching legal action to prevent implementation of Bill C-18, the Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act, which passed third reading in the Senate and was given Royal Assent by the Governor General.

There will be a bountiful harvest of giving once again this coming Tuesday as the farm equipment is fired up for the Taber and District Foodgrains Project.
Times have been tough as far as yields go these past two seasons, as Mother Nature has greeted farmers with plenty of flooding from high levels of moisture. Nevertheless, this year’s return looks to be higher than last year’s offering for the project.

Mother Nature very nearly provided an almost perfect spring for potato growers. That was, of course, until the rain hit late last Wednesday night.
For producers, it was a case of being so close to completing harvest, they could already taste the deep-fried french fries at the end of the rainbow.
