This year marks the 30th anniversary of Terry Fox’s attempt the cross Canada on foot.
As such, the local Terry Fox committee is putting its best foot forward in an attempt to mark the special occasion. The first event this year will take place Feb. 12, when the committee is set to host a Valentine’s dance from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. inside the Taber Legion hall.
“We wanted to have a good kick-off with the Valentine’s Day dance,” said local committee member Yvonne Dreaddy, who added the proceeds from the event go to the Terry Fox Foundation. “We are accepting donations of a minimum of $25 or more, which gets you a complimentary ticket and a tax receipt.”
The popular Lethbridge band, The Chevelles, will provide the entertainment, and are not charging the local Terry Fox committee for the band’s services.
“They felt that was their way of giving back,” said Dreaddy. “They get booked for a lot of stuff in town.”
Dreaddy first got in touch with The Chevelles about six years ago when the band played a Cornfest. Through drummer Don Plettell, Dreaddy convinced the band to play for Taber’s police ball. From there, she asked if it would be possible for the band to do a Terry Fox fundraiser. And the rest, they say, is history. But The Chevelles will not be the only highlight of the evening. Dreaddy added the night will feature door prizes, which include airline tickets, a full spa package and two legal-will packages, and an 11 p.m. buffet, complete with home-made treats for dessert.
A local business is also supplying free rides home, within Taber, to ensure party guests reach home safely at the end of the night.
It all adds up to a community event that Dreaddy added would not be possible without the solid support it has received.
“We have many wonderful partners for the fundraiser, and we couldn’t have the function without them.”
She added 130 tickets are available for the dance and at this point, the event is half way to being sold out.
The dance may be just the beginning for the local committee’s activities for this anniversary year, as Dreaddy added plans will become a lot more clear for 2010 in June, when local Terry Fox Run co-ordinators will meet to discuss other possible events for this year.
For the meantime, local organizers are putting the focus on the dance. For tickets, call Dreaddy to 403-382-5759, Brenda Berube at 403-308-2413 or stop by the Taber Legion or call 403-223-3382 to pick up a pledge sheet as well.
