Taberites broke out in song in solid numbers last week during National Literacy Day.
On Wednesday, 3,181 Taberites carried a tune, according to Holly Puskas of Taber and District Adult Learning. She added the M.D. of Taber surpassed the town in terms of numbers of singers but overall, she was pleased with the response.
“Everybody seemed to jump on board with it and had fun with it.”
A number of local businesses gave out freebies to anyone that came in and performed a song. Puskas added local merchants reported Taberites took advantage of the promotions, and performed a wide range of songs.
One business, she said, even took the singing spirit one step further than most.
“1st Choice Credit Union, they went over and beyond, The manager took little groups of three people and went to 14 locations in town encouraging others to sing.”
In the end, Taber Wal-Mart won the business challenges, as the store had 244 singers participate. Dr. Hamman, Vauxhall elementary and Sunshine Bible Time shared $50 prizes, which will go to their respective libraries, for having 100 per cent of their students sing. Edna Bartz won the individual prize, a magazine subscription of her choice.
Literacy day celebrations in Taber also included a kick-off event at the provincial building, which featured a Mennonite choir and a performance by the Taber Christian school band.
