Runners filled the streets Saturday morning for Taber’s annual Cornfest 5K/10K Fun Run. One of the organizers, Katherine Turcato, added 2010 numbers were down a bit from the year prior, but the event still included a large turnout. “We had about 325. We had a few less than last year but it was kind of chilly, so that probably didn’t help.” What did help was the use of the chip technology in the shoes of the participants. Instead of timing each runner, chips in the shoes of participants were tracked via computer, and the results were taken from there.

It was a tale of two halves for the W.R. Myers football team with its First Annual Cornfest Classic Rebels Football Game last Friday. Down 31-7 at half-time, the Rebels were able to close it to 31-21 but could get no closer in a loss to McCoy at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park.

Just like the A-Team, Brendan “Hacksaw” Blacquier likes it when a plan comes together... even when it was not the original plan to start with. A mere one amateur fight in his mixed-martial-arts career, time was ticking down to Rumble in the Cage 40, and still the fighter could not find an opponent. It proved no problem for Blacquier, who was forced in to pro duty as he pounded his opponent, Francois Bourassa, into submission a minute and 40 seconds into the first round as the referee waved No Mas to his continually-pounded opponent.

If you are a person who likes to take the bull by the horns when it comes to your Cornfest entertainment, a new event this year has something for you. A trio of Taberites are putting on Bullarama, a World Professional Bullriding sanctioned event for Cornfest this year on Friday. It is one of approximately 40 WPB events for 2010, as spectators will get to see the highlight of many rodeos — bull riding.

“As long as it’s remembered, that’s all we wanted, and I think we did that,” said a choked up and sentimental Rob Kanomata as he delivered the final speech at the final Lon Ferguson Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament on Sunday during closing ceremonies at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park. And remembered it will be for a tournament that had gone through many changes in its 25 years of existence, but one thing that had never changed was the youthful spirit and camaraderie to help commemorate the person it was named after.
