Taber bantam Blackhawks earned a tournament title in Coaldale on the weekend. The final saw the Blackhawks edge Strathmore 4-3. Shaun Duell scored twice and Spencer Leffingwell and Paul Shimbashi had singles for the Blackhawks in the win. Blackhawks beat host Coaldale in its opening game 7-4. Shimbashi scored twice and Leffingwell, Duell, Connor Martin, Brett Journoud and Alex Knibb had singles. Martin also drew three assists and Knibb had two helpers. Blackhawks followed up with a 2-0 shutout of Saskatchewan. Morgan Vandersteen scored both goals for Taber. Nik Paquin stopped 23 shots to earn the shutout in net. Blackhawks reached the final by vanquishing Medicine Hat 7-4. Leffingwell scored four times and Brent Anderson, Journoud and Shimbashi had singles. Earlier the Blackhawks played Coaldale in provincial playdown play, and won 4-0 and lost 8-2 to fall in the point-series playdown. Journoud, Knibb, Duell and Leffingwell tallied for the Blackhawks in the shutout, while two assists apiece came from Leffingwell and Shimbashi. Jordan Cook faced 31 shots to earn the shutout. The 8-2 loss featured tallies from Anderson and Leffingwell. Shimbashi had two assists. INITIATION: Taber Oilers won its home initiation tournament with a 15-5 victory over Calgary Bulldogs. Byron Kress, Carson Haynes and Carson Komery each had hat tricks. Carter DeBoer had two goals and Cassidy Phillips, Colby Garner, Carson Cleland and Ty Fitch all had singles. Oilers started off with a 14-4 win over Lethbridge Flamez. Haynes, Komery and Cleland each had hat tricks and Garner and DeBoer had two goals apiece. Brylan Span had a single and also drew two assists. Oilers got to the final with a 14-7 win over Redcliff Timbits. Haynes and DeBoer notched hat tricks and Komery had two goals. Phillips, Span, Cleland, Kress, Garner and Nolan Tams all had singles. NOVICE: Taber Bulldogs earned a 9-7 victory over Lethbridge Broncos on Sunday. Gage Wiebe and Dylan Nevil had three goals apiece and Denzel Gross tallied twice. Tristan Miller had a single. Taber Terminators skated to a 10-8 victory over Lethbridge Bulldogs. Kolby James had four goals and Calin Kinniburgh had a hat trick. Cody Stange had two goals and Brayden Peters had a single. Dallas Bodnar recorded five assists. Kole Fujita had two helpers. ATOM: Taber atom “C” Titans earned a 6-5 win over Cardston on the road on Saturday. Eric Brewin had a goal to go with two assists. Ayden Jensen, Tyson Meier, Nathon Kaye, Ryan Mankow and Ryan Hubble all had singles. Mitch Young drew two assists. MIDGET: Taber midget Oilers bowed out of midget “B” provincial playdowns with two losses to Bow island. The first was a 5-0 blanking at home last Tuesday, as the Oilers got numerous chances but nothing to show for it. Oilers traveled to Bow Island on Saturday and found its scoring touch, but also the penalty box in a 10-5 loss. Cody Miller had two goals in the loss. In league play, Taber was able to score twice in the last three minutes of the game, to tie the contest 5-5, as Jesse Tams banged in the equalizer as time expired. Five different Oilers scored in the game, as Taylor Fitch played solid defensively and Scott Perini had a strong game in net, as he made some big saves early. Oilers host Vauxhall Sabres at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Taber arena. |
