The M.D. of Taber turned in another sold performance last week in Brooks at the Southern Alberta Summer Games. In terms of overall point count, Taber was second with 1,979.5 points, behind the host County of Newell, which led everyone by a large margin, with 2,994.5 points. The County of Cypress/Redcliff was third with 1,586 points, while the City of Medicine Hat was fourth at 1,585 points.

Local talent Erin Yamabe is set to put her skills to work next week competing for Canada in the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held in Hollywood, California. The event, held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel from July 17-24, is known as the “Olympics for the Performing Arts,” with representatives of over 40 countries competing in various categories such as acting, dance, modeling, vocals, group vocals and dance, instrumental and variety.

Local high school student Tyson Shushkewich has recently been appointed to the Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council for the upcoming school year as part of the Speak Out — Alberta Student Engagement Initiative. The 14-year-old will be entering Grade 10 this fall and was encouraged to get involved by one of his former teachers.

The cold, wet spring has put Taber cornfields way behind, and southern Albertans may have to wait until nearly the end of August to crunch on a cob. All fingers are crossed the corn will be ready for Cornfest, scheduled for the Aug. 27 weekend. "At Cornfest I think they're going to have to use corn flakes," said Garry Valgardson, owner of Valgardson Farms.

With summer finally here, and provincial Communities in Bloom judges coming to town, one local group has decided to do its part to improve Taber’s chances. Green and Clean Taber is holding a second town clean-up next Tuesday, from 6-8 p.m. “I think we decided on the downtown core,” said Patti Lund, of where the group is going to begin, as she added Confederation Park and the area surrounding the community centre will also get a going over, among others. “We may go across the highway to the 7-11 area and do that area if we have enough manpower.”
