Taber had another local resident recently join the ranks of the centenarians. Ivy Elizabeth Lund celebrated her 100th birthday in the extended care facility at the Taber Hospital on Monday afternoon. Born on June 30, 1910 in Reigate, Surrey, England, Ivy immigrated to Vernon, B.C. at age two. As a child, Ivy enjoyed attending school with classmates, taking geography class, and reading, but admitted a distaste for science and arithmetic.

When he’s not helping shape the educational future for Horizon School Division, the instruction he is giving himself is pushing himself to the limit with one of his passions. Wilco Tymensen, associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction at Horizon School Division, is competing at the B.C. Bike Race, which started on Sunday, along with his wife, Lisa. The race, which concludes on July 3, will span approximately 450 kilometres over its prologue and seven stages, which will take Tymensen on his mountain bike from North Vancouver to such other scenic areas as Nanaimo, Cumberland, Powell River, Sechelt, Squamish and Whistler.

Get your party hats, noise makers and well wishes ready, as an upcoming birthday will be one to remember. Ethel Krizsan will be celebrating her 100th birthday this Friday, and everyone is invited for a come-and-go tea at Clearview Lodge from 2-4 p.m. “Everything has turned out good,” said Krizsan, reflecting on her bountiful long life. “I turned out pretty good and I have a nice family and some pretty good friends.”

The Taber Times took home a host of awards earlier this month at the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association’s spring meeting. At AWNA’s annual General Excellence Awards, The Times took first place overall in the general excellence for papers in Class C, with a circulation between 2,000-3,499. It beat out 11 other papers for the honour, and took first place with a total of 846.4 points in the judging scale. The second-place paper, the Bonnyville Nouvelle, had 782.4 points.

A program that looked like it was on its last legs due to the recession and government program cutbacks, Family Connections has enjoyed a last-minute reprieve and will continue to be in existence. It was confirmed at the Horizon School Division’s board meeting on June 22 that Alberta Health Services — Addictions and Mental Health, has approved the funding for the Mental Health Capacity Building Project through Family Connections, will continue to be funded to the 2012-2013 school year.
