A man who was sought by Lethbridge Regional Police after fleeing a traffic stop was arrested without incident along 5 Avenue South Thursday afternoon, which had involved a police pursuit in Taber.
Richard John Dewar, 45, was sought in connection with an incident that occurred in the 300 block of 12C Street North in Lethbridge Wednesday afternoon. A police officer conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Corsica after recognizing the driver as someone with a suspended licence. The officer told the driver to turn off the vehicle but he refused and started to drive forward. The officer attempted to stop the man and was dragged a short distance and suffered minor injuries to his arms in the process. The vehicle fled the area and was later found near 44 Avenue and 36 Street North. The car again sped off and police pursued for a short time before calling it off. At approximately 1:17 am last Thursday, officers with the Taber Police Service observed a motor vehicle matching the description of a vehicle that was involved in the serious incident in Lethbridge last Wednesday. Taber police were aware the suspect in that incident was wanted for assault against a police officer with a weapon, dangerous driving, criminal flight, and obstruction. Taber Police Service officers were able to confirm the identity of the vehicle as the one that was involved earlier in the criminal assault against the officer. Taber Police attempted to stop the vehicle with their emergency equipment and the vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated. Due to the speed and reckless driving of the fleeing suspect, members of the Taber Police Service terminated the pursuit. The suspect vehicle was later located abandoned in the 5300 block of 49th Street in Taber early Thursday morning. Police established a cordon and a LRPS K-9 unit attended Taber to assist in the apprehension of the suspect, but was unable to locate him. Dewar is charged with assaulting a peace officer, flight from a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer, disqualified driving and dangerous driving. |
