Baseball is a game that is just as much mental as it is physical.

For the W.R. Myers Rebels baseball team, the time is now to get their heads in the game.

The team was 10-runned by Brooks last week at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park where mental errors took place all over the field leading to the lopsided score.

“After the game we told them what we expect. We know we are not the most skilled team out there, but when (Brandon) Fehr and I played the game (with the Vauxhall Spurs) we brought it to the diamond every single game and we gave it our all no matter what,” said Caleb Zsednai who co-coaches the team along with Fehr.

“Even if you are not winning the game, you still have to be in the game, talking. We want them to show up, give it their all, talk and stay in the game. We are going to have to be a hard-working team which is how you turn heads and win games. You have to earn your runs, nothing is going to be given to you. Mental mistakes just can’t happen this frequently. They happened a lot.”

Zsednai was pleased with the team’s hitting after a mid-game pep talk, but it could not salvage the game as pitching and defence struggled all game long.

“I wanted them to be aggressive and swing at pitches so I was pleased with that,” said Zsednai.

“But mentally, we weren’t there right from the get go. There was a missed sign in the first inning where we had a base runner on and it looked like we could get things going. I called a hit and run, he missed it and our runner got put out at second and the game went downhill from there.”

Mother Nature looks like it may throw the Rebels schedule for a loop with a road game scheduled for yesterday at Eagle Butte with snow in the forecast.

Weather is expected to be poor throughout the week where the Rebels team is also scheduled for a home game against Maple Creek at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

“I really do think this will be our turning point to see if our message is getting through,” said Zsednai. “I hope it will.”
