The Taber 3-on-3 Hardwood Hoedown basketball tournament which goes this weekend will have Basketball Alberta backing it for the first time.

The tournament has been officially sanctioned by Basketball Alberta and will be the first stop on the Alberta tour as the 3-on-3 basketball format continues to gain prominence on the provincial, national and international stages.

The adult division had entries flooding in for the 3-on-3 Hardwood Hoedown.

“The adult division is excited about playing here and possibly getting their world ranking. Our adult division, we have 16 men’s teams which will be very fun, playing on the Friday night,” said Aaron Edlund, a co-organizer of the Taber 3-on-3 Hardwood Hoedown which will be played out at the new gym at Barnwell School.“For anyone wanting to watch some basketball, Friday night should be pretty intense.”

The popularity of 3-on-3 basketball is growing with rumblings it is being considered to be an Olympic sport in the near future. Being part of the official Alberta tour, teams who register for the Taber event and compete in other 3-on-3 tournaments can achieve a world ranking of where your team stands.

The U17 and 18-plus divisions play on Friday from 5-11 p.m. at Barnwell School with the U11, U13 and U15 divisions playing on Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. A concession will be on hand for spectators.

“Last weekend there was a club U14 volleyball tournament and it brought a whole other crowd in there that have never been in the school,” said Edlund. “The gym keeps getting rave reviews and people keep asking us how we got it. They are impressed. This basketball tournament will be another chance to get people in the doors and have eyes on our school and our gym.”
