Local lifters break records at Taber meet

Body Masters hosted the 2018 Single Event Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift Championships last month.

There were 76 entries, with most lifters coming from western Canada to compete at this event. There were strong lifters in the mens and womens teenage, open and masters divisions. A total of 40 Canadian records were broken at this contest.

Following are the local lifters that participated in this competition: All recorded lifts are in pounds and * means Canadian Record.

Rachel Hammer – 123 lb. Open women – Squat 187* 1st; Bench Press 110* 1st; Deadlift 242* 1st.

Cassandra Orr – 132 lb. Open women – Squat 292* 1st ; Bench Press 156* 1st ; Deadlift 370* 1st.

“This was her first contest making a triple bodyweight deadlift and a 2.5 bodyweight squat which is awesome lifting for a 125-pound female athlete,” said Randy Sparks, organizer of the Body Masters event.

Sarah Cowley -148 lb. Open Women – Squat 308* 1st; Bench 160* 1st; Deadlift 319* 1st.

“She had a fantastic day breaking Canadian records in the squat, bench and deadlift,” said Sparks.

Rose Gerlock -123 lb. Masters Women- Squat 160* 1st; Bench 110 1st; Deadlift 270* 1st.

“This was Rose’s first competition. She lifted in the 123-pound Masters 55-59 womens division. She lifted a very impressive deadlift of 270 pounds which is a Canadian record,” said Sparks.

Katia Fajnor – 198 lb. Master Women – Squat 242 1st ; Bench 148 1st; Deadlift 303 1st.

John Banman 165 lb. Open Men – Squat 297 1st; Bench 198 1st; Deadlift 374 1st.

Jeff Lastuka – 242 lb. Open Men – Squat 600* 1st; Bench 390* 1st; Deadlift 627* 1st.

“Jeff is a very impressive lifter. He broke the Canadian squat, bench and deadlift records. I know Jeff could win the world championships if he competed,” said Sparks.

Neil Fajnor – 275 lb. Open Men – Squat 402 1st.

Brad Wilson – 220 lb. Open Men- Bench 330 1st.

Aric Loewen – 198 lb. Junior Men – Squat 429 2nd; Bench 303 2nd; Deadlift 473.

Clay Sparks – 242 lb. Junior men – Squat 534* 1st; Bench 336* 1st; Deadlift 551* 1st.

“Clay broke the Canadian junior squat record by just over 100 pounds and broke the junior deadlift record by 75 pounds. He also broke the Canadian bench record by 40 pounds which made for very strong lifting,” said Sparks.

Best lifters at the competition were Cassandra Orr and Jeff Lastuka.

“I was very impressed with all the competitors at this contest. It is amazing to see the level of competition and strength of these athletes get better and better each year,” said Sparks.
