St. Mary’s volleyball is coming down the home stretch in its volleyball programs with varying degrees of success.

The Grade 9 girls team finished in second place in its league championship this past weekend, with eyes towards hosting 3J junior high zones on Nov. 3.

“The team has had a successful year, finishing up with one gold medal and three silvers and a bronze. We are hoping to cap an already awesome season with some additional hardware,” said head coach Derry Kolody.

Kolody also coaches the St. Mary’s Celtics boys volleyball team which is coming off the heels of winning gold in Vulcan at a tournament where the Celtics beat Senator Gershaw Gators 19-25, 25-22, 15-10 in the championship.

“The team has made huge strides this past two weeks and is starting to believe in each other. The passing and setting were outstanding and were able to show our depth in offence with arguably four of the heaviest balls hit in the weekend belonging to four different Celtic players,” said Kolody. “It was the best team effort of the year. Leadership core of our season has been Celtics players Spencer Phillips, Rory Murphy, and Carl Rodrigo providing clutch passing and setting. With one tournament left in Crowsnest Pass, the Celtics are hoping to start peaking for zones in a couple of weeks.”
