Another Vauxhall Spurs baseball season is fast approaching, and Taber0area players that are wanting to try out for the team are encouraged to attend the Spurs’ annual general meeting on March 6.
The squad is expected to be a deep one this year.
“All the players who played on the team last year are eligible to come back,” said John Zsednai, president of the Vauxhall Spurs Baseball Club.
“We anticipate a bunch of young guys and some guys who had played for the team previously coming back, so the tryouts should be interesting. I think we have a team that can make a run at the State title this year, so we are going to start early.”
The team will feature four 19 year olds, so the Spurs look to be at the peak of their growth spurt with its current team.
“We are going to be as good as we are going to be in the next two years,” said Zsednai.
“We have kids now that will have been with the program for four years. The coaches are coming back, so it all looks good.”
With the annual general meeting, the Spurs organization wants to know how many kids will be coming out to register. Spring training for the team will begin in March and will continue on in April.
The final team will be in place by the long weekend in May before the team’s first tournament in Lethbridge. League play starts May 27. The district tournament is in Medicine Hat this year, with State in Great Falls.
The Spurs’ annual general meeting is on March 6 at 7 p.m. at Luigi’s.
SPURS JANGLE: In 2015, American Legion Baseball, which the Spurs play in, will no longer allow 19-year-old players.
“Once you graduate high school and play that summer, you are done,” said Zsednai.
“Effectively, that puts our programs in the same age group as Baseball Alberta’s midget programs, Babe Ruth programs, the same age as Little League’s sponsored big league program. So now, you have four programs to choose from. The only advantage of playing American Legion right now, is we can bring our kids back one more year.”
