Local athletes from Zone 1 brought home medals last week from the Alberta Summer Games, held this year in the Peace River area.
Four members of last year’s Taber bantam Rebels football team, Stuart Tams, Alex Dykstra, Hunter Sorgard and Cole Fiedler won a bronze after the Zone 1 team defeated Zone 6 26-16 in the third-place game.
Zone 1 also defeated Zone 2 31-0 and took a 19-0 decision over Zone 4 . The team’s lone loss was a 18-5 defeat to Zone 3.
Baseball players Nolan Gilbertson, Brody Knouse and Matthew Odland of Taber settled for fifth, despite a solid 3-1 record after round-robin play, as a tiebreaking formula pushed the team out of medal contention.
The locals helped Zone 1 to wins over Zone 8 (10-5), Zone 3 (11-10) and Zone 2 (16-8). The one loss came to Zone 6, by a 12-1 score. Vauxhall’s Joel Meier and Logan Enns were also on the baseball team.
The only other Taberite in the Games, Carson Beers, saw his soccer team take seventh, after losses to Zone 6 (6-1), Zone 7 (4-3) and Zone 3 (2-0).
His team’s win was a 1-0 triumph over winless Zone 2.
