A local rodeo legend was honoured at the Taber Outdoor Pro Rodeo in July.
The Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame wanted to recognize the cowboys and cowgirls of pro rodeo that made a great impact in the rodeo arena. Ranchman’s of Calgary and the CRHA Board of Directors developed the category Legendary Achievement Award to the Hall of Fame in 2004.
This year, the legend recognized was Taber’s own Darwin (DC) Lund, with a special Hall of Fame buckle.
Darwin’s legend came from the fact Lund had the natural athletic ability and dedication to compete in all five major events, and won money in every major event together with the Wild Horse Race and Wild Cow Milking.
Lund started competing at nine years of age in the steer riding, and joined the CPRA in 1962. He concentrated on the riding events in his early years, but found steer wrestling was his strongest event. He served on the CRCA board as the director for steer wrestling in 1974 and 1975, while he also remained in the top five of Canada in the event.
Locally, Lund was inducted into the Taber and District Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 for his contributions on and off the rodeo grounds.
Lund was part of the organizing committee that ran the only rodeo in Africa's existence in 1974, when Zambia celebrated its 10th anniversary of independence. From 1947 until 1984 when he retired, he participated in every Calgary Stampede, except for three.
He held a Canadian Finals Rodeo arena record for steer wrestling that stood for 15 years with a time of 3.6 seconds. In Australia, he competed in 24 rodeos and won steer wrestling at the national finals. He won calf roping and steer wrestling titles at the World Series championships.Lund was also the 1965 Southern Alberta Rodeo Circuit steer wrestling champion and all-around champion. In 1966, he was the runner-up at the Calgary Stampede steer decorating.
From 1972 to 1975, Lund finished in the top four in the Canadian steer wrestling standings and was runner-up to Kenny Maclean in the 1972 Canadian steer wrestling finals.
On hand for the presentation were his wife Patty, and representing Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dancehall as one of the 2010 inductees to the Rodeo Hall of Fame, Phil Doan, rodeo Hall of Fame directors Happy Tegart and Jess Hyland and Taber Pro Rodeo chairman Barry Jensen.
