Pledge from Alberta NDP: 2000 long term care beds across Alberta

Today, NDP Leader Rachel Notley announced the NDP’s plan to improve patients’ access to long-term care. Successive PC governments have failed to build enough or the right type of facilities for our seniors, and budget 2015 demonstrated that this is just not a priority for them.
The Alberta New Democratic Party pledges to build 2,000 long-term care beds over the next four years, and raise standards at long-term care facilities.
“Alberta’s seniors deserve better from their government,” said Maria Fitzpatrick, NDP Candidate in Lethbridge-East. “This is a plan that prioritizes the needs of Albertans. Not only will this ensure that Alberta’s seniors have the type of care they need, but it will also help to make our healthcare system more efficient in general, lowering wait times and improving acute care when we need it the most.”
Presently, more than 400 Albertans are currently waiting in acute care beds for placement in a long-term care facility. System wide there are almost 1200 people waiting for placement, either at home, or in a place where they are not receiving the right type of care.
“These numbers are simply unacceptable,” says Fitzpatrick. “These Albertan’s worked hard and provided for this province they deserve the best care available and the province needs to ensure that is available and accessible. I am proud to be running for a party that is standing up for seniors.”
