Wildrose commits to expanding Sunshine List across government

Posted on April 15, 2015 by Taber Times

Today, the Wildrose committed to expand the “Sunshine List” salary and severance disclosure and the disclosure of vendors to all levels of government, including agencies, boards and commissions (ABCs).

“Unlike the PCs, the Wildrose is committed to standing up for greater transparency and accountability across government,” Wildrose Leader Brian Jean said. “Recently we have heard about PC vendors working for ABC’s, like AMVIC, doing research on PC candidates and opposition candidates. Jim Prentice needs to reassure Albertans that the PC party isn’t looking after its partisans through undisclosed contracts and crony appointments in vast network of agencies, boards and commissions.”

Currently, the Sunshine List only exposes six-figure salaries and the contract disclosure exposes vendors over $10,000, but only in government departments. This means agencies such as the $17 billion Alberta Health Services remain shrouded in secrecy. There are 52 agencies reporting directly to government and the 142 ABCs that are governed under the Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act.

Six months ago, the Prentice PCs promised a full review of all ABCs to be completed, and have broken their promise to expand the Sunshine List. To date, no reports of this review have been made public.

“Under the Prentice PCs, government has become more secretive, more expensive and less accountable,” Jean said. “With a strong team of Wildrose MLAs in the Legislature, we will return government back to the hands of Albertans, expose the layers of PC fat across government, keep taxes low and put Alberta back on the path to prosperity.

On May 5, Albertans have an important choice to make: a vote for higher taxes, higher spending and less services, or a vote for the Wildrose – a party dedicated to no tax increases, and a positive vision for jobs, growth and prosperity. The only way to stop your taxes from going up is to vote Wildrose.
