PCs: Wildrose school fees promise doesn’t add up

Posted on April 24, 2015 by Taber Times

Issue
The Wildrose has re-announced that they would eliminate mandatory school fees
Reality Check
Brian Jean has repeatedly directed Albertans to page 5 of his platform for details on his plan. That page states that cancelling mandatory school fees would cost $100 million per year.
Alberta Education estimates school fees at $193 million per year. The Wildrose platform falls short by $93 million per year.
And it’s not in any way clear how Brian Jean plans to replace the money that school boards receive from these fees.
That same page 5 of Brian Jean’s platform fails to tell Albertans where the rest of his numbers come from in terms of reducing spending. There are no details on what he says he will cut.
Meanwhile, he is making promises to Alberta families, while grossly underestimating the cost of them.
Where will the cuts come from and who will suffer to achieve this unfunded promise?
