Atom Oil Kings can clinch zones with win

Initiaton 1

Taber Initiation 1 and 2 Oil Kings were both involved in a Redcliff tournament last weekend. Initiation 1 played Initiation 2 on Saturday, Feb. 22. Initiation 1 defeated Initiation 2 by a score of 13 – 4.

Nathan Planger had four goals in the effort for Initiation 1, Kayden Kress and Langdon Cummins each had hat tricks, while Jordan Genert scored two goals. Rex Bell added a single and Shaylee DeBona added an assist.

Initiation 1 played their second game against Medicine Hat Canucks, losing 10 – 9 in the effort.

Planger had a hat trick in the effort, Kress scored a pair, and DeBona, Tanner Fletcher, Bell, and Tyson Church each had singles.

Initiation played Redcliff Grizzlies for their final game of the tourney and defeated the host team by a score of 15 – 1.

Planger had four goals, Cummins had three, and Max Anderson, Kress, Bell, and Fletcher each had two-goal efforts.

Initiation 2

Taber Initiation 2 played Redcliff Grizzlies in the first game of their tournament and won 10 – 4 over the host team. Roman Pavka and Sam Tolsma each had hat tricks, Konnor Wiebe had a pair of goals, and Branson DeVlieger and Tyson Church each had singles. Brooke Friesen tallied an assist.

Initiation 2 lost their second game to Initiation 1 by a score of 13 – 4, with goals coming from Tolsma with two goals, and Pavka and Church each recording singles in the effort.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, initiation 2 defeated Medicine Hat by a score of 12 – 7. Pavka scored a hat trick and an assist for four points, Church scored two goals, Wiebe had a goal and an assist, Wieler Krahn scored a goal, and Jaida Peters had an assist in the effort.

Atom Tier IA

Taber atom 1A Oil Kings can win their provincial zone finals after a convincing win against Coaldale in game one of their series.

The Oil Kings battled the Coaldale Cobras on Feb. 22, soundly defeating them by a score of 6 – 2 at the Taber Arena.

Taber opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Jaxxon Pavka assisted by Carson Cleland. Coaldale tied it up 30 seconds later and the two teams took a 1-1 draw into the second.

Taber jumped ahead in the middle frame after Carter DeBoer scored halfway through the period with help from Colby Garner and Nathan Verloop. Verloop would find the back of the net a few minutes later with assists coming from Garner, Brylan, and Span. It was 3-1 for Taber entering the final frame.

Taber scored two more goals before Coaldale was able to find the back of the net again.

Goals came from Deboer (Cleland) and Garner (unassisted).

Haynes scored the sixth and final goal for Taber with under two minutes to go in the period with help from Kyler James.

Taber and Coaldale square off one more time in Coaldale on Feb. 26, and a win would see Taber become zone champions. Feb. 26 results were not available at press time.

Bantam Tier II

Taber bantam Oil Kings defeated Chestermere Lakers 3 – 1 in league playoffs in a Feb. 22 game at the Taber Arena.

Taber scored the first goal of the game in the dying seconds of the first period after team captain Kevin Turner found the back of the net with help from Quinn Slezak.

Chestermere tied the game in the second period before Taber took the lead for good with a goal by Evan Harkness from Tyson Meier. Ryan Hubble scored the put-away marker in the third period unassisted. Kings goaltender stopped 19 of 20 shots to record the win.
