St. Mary Celtics boys volleyball team earned a silver finish in its tournament run at Lethbridge College over the weekend.

The Celtics had their hands full in the 16-team field, as St. Mary struggled in pool play and needed to secure second to stay on the top side of the draw.

“We needed our last game Friday to win by more than five and won by 10. Played a number one team in the other pool in Medicine Hat and won in three games,” said Derry Kolody, head coach of the St. Mary boys Celtics volleyball team.

The Celtics continued its momentum in its semifinal against heavy favourite Immanuel Christian who prognosticators had winning the tournament. The Celtics lost its first game 20-25, down 10-19 at one point. The Celtics bounced back to win the second game of the set, and while racing out to a 5-0 lead in the deciding set, managed to complete the come-from-behind victory.

The Celtics would eventually have its tournament run end with a loss to Cardston in the final, although giving a much more spirited match than previously when the two met in pool play.

“We played them on Friday in pool play and we were destroyed, molly whopped — pick your cliché. They were surprised to see us,” said Kolody of the eventual 15-25, 22-25 Celtics loss.

The Celtics are off this weekend before returning to tournament action in Bow Island at Senator Gershaw starting on Sept. 27.
