Two St. Mary’s volleyball teams brought home some bragging rights from this past weekend as the Junior Varsity Storm team won a tournament in Barnwell and the JV Auroras won a tournament in Claresholm.

The JV Storm saw success right out of the gate, which lasted all the way to the final where they were able to grind out a big win to be crowned the winners.

“We finished first in our pool and then met up with Barnwell in the semi-finals. We played Cardston in the finals and it took three sets to beat them,” explained head coach Melanie Bos.

Despite the group not having much experience heading into the new season, they’ve been able to steadily get better with each and every passing week.

With the tournament win this past weekend, the Storm have proven hard work pays off.

“Our team has not had a lot of experience on the court and started the season with very little skill. They have worked very hard and improved with every practice and game,” added Bos.

For the JV Auroras, they too have seen steady improvement with every game and practice.

The coaching staff has been incredibly happy with the progression by the team to continue to get better with each passing set of volleyball.

“We had a tough semi-final game against Stirling. We beat them 25-17, 25-18. Earlier in the season, we played in their home tournament and they were undefeated and they got us in the crossover. We beat them in three and this time we beat them in two. It just shows that we keep making improvements,” stated coach Derry Kolody. “The final was 25-11, 25-14 against Vulcan.”
